History of BCHS Graduates Told at 1967 Commencement

The Bennington Catholic High School Class of 1967, 87 students, heard Fr. Richard Sullivan of the Holy Cross Fathers praise BCHS ten years of existence and its impact on faith and knowledge. He urged private schools to seek partial public support, noted staff stipends saving public funds, and proposed an Ecumenical Educational Center as a model for future religious education. Patricia Chaloux challenged peers to continue their path, and valedictorian Diane Niles urged a peaceful world as graduates prepared to go forth.

Symbolic Finale as BCHS Closes on Noted Recession

Bennington Catholic High School concluded its 12 year existence with a symbolic graduation. Fr. Thaddeus Swertz distributed eight junior marshals symbolic tokens representing school history including a Missal saber textbook BCHS letter trophies and the gold seal. The 87 seniors wore gold tassels for the final time as the Alma Mater played.

First Lady Paints President as Protester at Middlebury

At Middlebury College Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson awarded an honorary degree and urged graduates to be working protesters against injustice. She praised protest as a method requiring effort and patience, cited her husband as a lifelong active protester, and warned against viewing the world only through crises.

U S Aid Offered If Middle East Cooperation Grows

New Terms For BCHS Rental

Supt. Howard F. Kelley said the Bennington Catholic High School board offered to drop a $5,000 maintenance fee from the rental price. The union board had been asked for $52,000 total with maintenance, now revised to $47,000 all inclusive with BCHS absorbing maintenance if Mt. Anthony Union agrees. The union board has a weekend deadline to decide on renting BCHS, basic rent remains $40,000 with heat and light making $47,000.

Fire destroys Crooked Lake Hotel during GOP dinner

A Saturday blaze at the century-old Crooked Lake Hotel forced about 900 guests from the Rensselaer County Republican Committee dinner and gala for Charles A. Schoeneck to evacuate. Four fire companies fought the smoky fire, preventing loss in the dining area, with damage estimated in the thousands.
