United Nations Secretary General Thant reported Friday night that both Syria and Israel issued cease-fire orders. The briefing cited a halt to hostilities and urged adherence from all armed factions.
Senator George Aiken of Vermont criticizes the Johnson administration for failing to bring the Vietnam War to a speedy fair end. He argues that peace is unlikely while the Johnson Rusk McNamara leadership remains in power and urges detachment and objectivity. The report also covers the UN Security Council cease fire resolution in the Middle East with conflicting claims of bombing and adherence.
First Lady Lady Bird Johnson toured Massachusetts and Vermont on a four day New England visit. She rode a chairlift up Mt Mansfield with governors and dignitaries, visited the Adams historic site in Quincy, and received gifts including a seedling from the Adams elm and a portrait photo bearing Abigail Adams. Johnson noted Abigail Adams letters and praised the Blooming bushes at the Adams homestead.

UPI reports the United States seeks a lasting Middle East peace with Arab recognition of Israel and an end to hostility. Israel must moderate. Arabs face a difficult forgiveness path after defeat. US-Russia cooperation on peace questioned, as Moscow uses hot line amid cease-fire interests. White House backs territorial integrity, while avoiding specifics on Israeli gains. Rusk and Christian brief senators on ceasefire, disarmament hopes, and possible talks under UN or other channels.
Vermont education chairman Harold Raynolds urged that town officials whose residents attend Burr and Burton Seminary be named to the school’s board to improve articulation among schools and oversee public funds. He suggested advisory seats until a charter change via Legislature. The state board praised BBS academically but noted lacks in industrial arts and homemaking curricula.
A Friday evening silent vigil in Putnam Square drew 39 participants who stood along the northeast fence for an hour to protest the Vietnam War. Black armbands were available, mimeographed statements were offered, and police observed seven officers nearby with no incidents reported. The group plans to return for another vigil between 5 and 6 pm next Friday.
