Herbert Geroux of Bristol leads an uphill event in the first annual Canada versus New England Observed Time Trials at Prospect Mt. Bennington rider Robert Griffin watches as New England wins narrowly. Proceeds go to the Bennington Rescue Squad. standings will be announced tomorrow with a run-off next Sunday in Canada to be announced locally.
President Nixon announced the planned redeployment of about 25,000 U S troops from Vietnam by end August with initial transfer to Okinawa and Hawaii. The move follows talks with South Vietnamese President Thieu at Midway Island and aims to replace departing forces with South Vietnamese troops as Paris peace talks progress.
Deputy Tom Davis Holland will become deputy director of the Vermont Office of Economic Opportunity on July 1, reporting to state CEO Thomas C. Davis. He will coordinate activities of five community action programs, provide technical assistance, aid in training, and identify available federal and state funds. The Bennington Rutland Opportunity Council seeks a new director and three community aides as it expands, with $30,000 in federal OEO funds anticipated for an emergency food and medical relief program this summer. Holland and family will relocate to Montpelier. he has lived in Bennington 12 of 20 years.

Rhode Island Governor Frank Licht and former Vermont Governor Philip Hoff urged youth involvement at a Democratic fund dinner in Bennington. Hoff, thinner and relaxed, spoke of energizing the party, recalling Kennedy and Coolidge, and urged a group willing to set aside self interest to advance the American dream. The turnout was under 150, with speculation Hoff might seek public office again.
