Supreme Court sets aside murder conviction in 14-year-old slaying
The U S Supreme Court voids the 1958 murder conviction of Robert Elmer Gallegos of Denver who, at age 14, was given a life sentence for beating and robbing an elderly man. The majority says the trial evidence failed to support the verdict, while a dissent accuses the court of basing the decision on conjecture and empathy rather than the record. The case references the victim Robert F. Smith and the 13 dollar theft.
