Stowe Wins Partial Victory Over County Tax Powers
Vermont Supreme Court overturns Lamoille County Superior Court ruling and sends the dispute back for a new hearing. The case centers on a 1975-76 budget that imposed a three‑cent tax on each town’s grand list, which Stowe opposed as funds used for the sheriff’s department and county jail. The court urged strict interpretation of county powers and ordered reevaluation of expenditures and the town’s assessment.

Georgia greyhound track plans may be dead
GEORGIA (UPI) Two plans for the state's first greyhound racing track may be dead. Yankee Greyhound Racing Inc officials will decide by late this week whether to proceed with the dog track plan, which voters approved last year and has environmental permits but no racing license application. Company VP Joseph Carney Jr said the firm re evaluates the economics of a $1 million project, fearing insufficient profits. Essex Valley promoters also appear to have lost interest in a Champlain Valley Fairgrounds site in Essex Junction. Local opposition was strong at a public hearing, and racing spokesmen would drop the idea if opposition remains. Essex Town officials reported no petition drive to force a public vote.
