Six more railroads shut crews amid a nationwide dispute affecting 10 carriers. Nixon appealed for a quick settlement as United Steelworkers threaten to intensify industry wide walkouts. Government officials warned of possible power and economic disruptions this winter.
Wise shoppers rush to markets as a spreading railroad strike threatens shortages of eggs chicken canned and frozen foods. The United Transportation Union expands walkouts to 10 lines with more strikes planned affecting nearly half of U S railroad mileage and over half of freight movements. Ford closes three plants, GM and Chrysler expect impact, and fears of price increases prompt urgent buying.
Edwin Newman cut short a live Today Show interview with George Jessel after the entertainer called The New York Times and The Washington Post Pravda. Jessel, in USO uniform touring bases in Europe, defended his remarks. Newman halted the segment and NBC praised his handling of the volatile exchange.
Cloudy conditions continue through Sunday with showers and thundershowers likely. Highs will reach the high 70s today and tomorrow, with low temperatures around 60 tonight.

The House approved a 250 million government loan guarantee to Lockheed Aircraft Corp to avert bankruptcy, sending the measure to a Senate filibustered that blocks a similar plan. The vote was 192 to 189 after defeating a 225 million proposal. an amendment requires a GAO audit after loans.
