Cost of Living Jump Supports Tax Increase Push
UPI reports the June cost of living rose three tenths of 1 percent, the third straight monthly gain, lifting the index to 116 percent of the 1957-59 average. Food prices drove much of the rise, while excluding food the increase was two tenths of 1 percent. The piece notes Johnson’s likely tax hike plan, arguing higher taxes would curb inflation as GNP growth slows and price increases imply needed restraint.
