Prices Rise as Gardeners Brace for Summer Costs
The USDA warns higher production costs for commercial vegetables may keep output tight and prices elevated while home gardens could lower tomato and corn prices later. Meat and poultry stay pricey with rising summer demand. beef may ease late summer after grazing worsens. Prices vary by city with ground chuck from 69 cents to 1.39 dollars per pound and eggs from 49 to 85 cents a dozen. Frozen fish inventories are ample, and dried beans offer meatless protein options when paired with dairy or rice.

Acid Rain Emerges as Growing New England Problem
In New England acid precipitation has risen about 100 fold over 20 years with storms reaching acidity levels 1000 times normal. The pH of rain now averages around 4.0, sourced mainly from sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from power plants, mills, and autos. Hubbard Lake NH shows anomalously high acidity, supporting long range sulfur dioxide dispersion. EPA studies and international collaboration seek to clarify health and ecological impacts and mitigation options.
