Five minutes later the blaze was out as volunteers, including spare drivers, dug out at 2:50 a.m. No horses burned. In Pownal the afternoon alarm at Green Mountain race track arose from smoke believed to come from a horse barn, but crews found only a disinfectant fog being blown through the stables and no fire.
