State seeks reargument on 72 apportionment law
Vermont moves to rehear the 1972 Senate apportionment dispute. Assistant Attorney General Martin Miller seeks reargument on timing for a new plan and on whether the court suggested proposal is constitutional. The state argues the 1972 plan keeps a 22-8 Republican majority and that the court’s alternative would require a 20 member senate with county additions. Democratic ex governor Philip Hoff and Senator H Ward Bedford urge single member districts but concede time to draft is limited. The board will hear public testimony on the principles amid debate over open sessions.
