In London a secret meeting between opposition leader Harold Wilson and IRA leaders spurred hopes for a new Ulster cease-fire. Emergency at Attica tightens as inmates protest resumes

A temporary state of emergency was declared at Attica State Correctional Facility as inmates refused to leave cells in a protest echoing last year’s riot. By day’s end about 650 of 1200 inmates boycotted the evening meal, down from 800 in the morning, with extra guards on duty and visitation canceled except for reporters and relatives.

Rolling Stones Arrested in Warwick Ahead of Boston Show

The Rolling Stones, including Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, were arrested in Warwick, Rhode Island, after a confrontation with a photographer. South Viet Paratroopers Battle North in Quang Tri Fight

South Vietnamese paratroopers backed by artillery and air support battled a tank and artillery Communist force on the fringe of Quang Tri City in a bloodiest phase of the government counteroffensive. The paratroopers killed 163 North Vietnamese, while South Vietnamese casualties were not reported. U.S. planes repeatedly fired on allied troops in separate incidents near Quang Tri and Hue, killing or wounding several soldiers. Naval and Air Force losses included two missing pilots from downed aircraft over North Vietnam. Civilian casualties rose as Communist shells hit Hue, killing five and wounding ten.
