Red China pledges aid to North Viet Nam in vow

Peking radio reported Premier Chou En-lai told North Vietnamese Ambassador Tan Tu Binh that China would aid North Viet Nam with all necessary actions until final victory in the South. The pledge followed Ho Chi Minh's defiant mobilization call and extended resistance to U.S. air raids.

Rusk Warns Reds About Volunteers in Viet Nam War

Secretary of State Dean Rusk warned the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact allies against sending volunteers to fight in Vietnam. He urged North Vietnam to observe civilized treatment of American airmen, warned against widening war, and reaffirmed U.S. commitment to South Vietnam. A U.S. official count noted 62 Americans held by Hanoi. China pledged support but did not indicate troop dispatch.

U.S. Warns North Vietnam Over Wartime Prisoners Note

Ambassador Arthur J. Goldberg delivered a note to the International Red Cross warning of disastrous consequences if North Vietnam tries captured U.S. pilots as war criminals. He said the letter, authorized at the highest level, cites the Geneva Prisoner of War convention. The Red Cross voiced deep concern for American prisoners held by Hanoi.

Arraignment Delayed For Suspected Killer

CHICAGO UP I reports the arraignment of Richard Speck for the eight nurse murders was delayed as officials debate security. The 24 year old drifter, captured after a bloodsoaked attack on Skid Row, faces high security measures and a possible jail transfer for court. A 12 inch hunting knife linked to Speck was recovered and crime lab tested. Five victims were buried or returned to the Philippines as authorities prepared for Day One in court.

National Guard Ends Riot Patrols in Chicago

National Guard troops fully withdrew after three nights of patrols on Chicago's west side restoring calm. Six arrests were reported Sunday night in the district where two people were shot to death and many injured last week during rioting. Maj. Gen. Francis P. Kane, commander of the 33rd Infantry Division, ordered 1,236 troops off the streets.

Santarcangelo Seeks Second Term in Vermont Senate

Vermont state Senator Salvatore Santarcangelo of Bennington County announced plans to seek re election to a full two year term. The 47 year old Republican first won his seat in the special state election after reapportionment and will seek the Republican nomination in September. His colleague Allan B Rngney Jr of Arlington has also said he will run again. The county has two state senators.

Dr. Eric Preiss a 37 year old Buffalo resident formerly of Hoosick Falls was arrested after being found asleep in his car which contained a pistol two rifles and ammunition two machetes and a large cash sum. Marines Thwart Major Offensive In Vietnam War Push

U.S Marines advancing through jungle mountains near the North Vietnamese border killed 148 Communist regulars and blocked a major offensive in the largest Leatherneck operation of the war. More than 7,000 Marines from Operation Deck House II and amphibious forces, aided by B52 bombers, moved toward a region close to the DMZ and near the Laotian frontier. Soviet bloc reports said missiles may be sent to bolster anti aircraft defenses, risking direct U.S.-Soviet confrontation in Vietnam. Photographs also appear of a Rockwell painting in a library exhibit, unrelated to the conflict.

Unidentified Woman Crashes Into Bluebird Diner

An unidentified woman driving a Washington D C plated car smashed into the Bluebird Diner on U S 7 near noon. The crash may have followed a brushing collision with a truck owned by J E Lynch Masonry Construction Co of Saxtons River. No injuries were reported. Police Chief Dana L Thompson and Auxiliary State Policeman Terry Tyler assisted at the scene.
