New England groups urge end to oil import controls
The New England Council and the New England Governors Conference urged ending oil import controls to stabilize heating oil supply and cut costs for the six-state region. They argued current measures shift a disproportionate national burden and hinder refinery plans in Machiasport, Maine, while noting regional vulnerability in emergencies. The groups were joined by the New England Fuel Institute and the Massachusetts Consumers Council in submitting the position to the Presidents Cabinet Task Force on Oil Import Controls.
