Apollo 11 blasted off from Cape Kennedy carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin on a historic voyage to place footprints on the moon. Armstrong reported the mission looked good as Launch Director Rocco Petrone declared the lift off on time.
USS Hornet races toward recovery area 1,767 miles southwest of Honolulu to retrieve Apollo 11 crew after lunar landing. Armstrong and Aldrin aim for Sea of Tranquillity touchdown at 4:19 pm EDT Sunday, with Collins remaining in orbit aboard Columbia. Nixon and Agnew attend, Johnson calls mission an effort for peace as Luna 15 races toward the moon.
Gen Earle G Wheeler arrived in Saigon to assess potential de-escalation as four week lull in Communist offensives continues. He will study readiness of South Vietnamese forces and report on conditions for possible troop withdrawals and reduced bombing.
John H. Carton longtime Bennington music chair and Mt. Anthony Union High School Thespian organizer will not return in fall. He accepted a head music job at a small Boston area school, citing Boston and his wife as home and wants closer student contact. Dover England reports the International Flat Earth Research Society remains committed to a flat earth belief despite Apollo 11 moon landings. Founder Samuel Shenton dismisses space as irrelevant and insists the earth is a flat, motionless plane with the sun and moon circling above a vast pit.
Village trustees and selectmen in Bennington pushed to form a combined housing and building codes committee headed by Pello. They planned to draft model codes, consider a building inspector, and align town and village efforts while addressing enforcement and funding through permit fees and fines.
