Mass climber dies on Wyoming peak rescue ends in tragedy
Two climbers battled wind and rain for over 12 hours on Mitchell Peak in Wyoming to recover a body. John D. Hagen, 22, of Salem Massachusetts, fell about 60 feet on the north face last Saturday and died from injuries. Berg, Hagen’s mother, claimed the name was an alias and that Gary M. Berg is wanted by the FBI. The rescuers, Martin Epp and Ken Clanton, who are outdoor leadership instructors, carried Hagen from a ledge to the valley after a long, difficult descent aided by a helicopter. The rope knot failed in an icy crack, precipitating the fatal fall.
