A fire Friday afternoon heavily damaged a single story home at 215 North Bennington Road near Bennington Flats. Virginia Martin occupied the house, Ted Deebe of Troy owned it, and an electrical short in a kitchen wall socket sparked the blaze. Rural firefighters quickly doused the flames, with prior damage to the living room, kitchen, furniture, and appliances noted.

Four persons were killed Friday night in Newark during a third straight night of racial violence. A Newark detective, 34 year old Fred Toto, died after being shot in the chest by a sniper from an apartment in Stella Wright housing. The Friday fatalities raised the city total to eight, with all but Toto being Black. Governor's office reported an emergency declaration was issued.

MONTPELIER UPD Board of Education Chairman Harold Raynolds said Friday the resignation of Education Commissioner Richard Gibboney was necessary to solve an impasse over basic philosophical differences. The board accepted Gibboney's resignation and named Deputy Commissioner Daniel O'Connor acting commissioner.
