Montpelier UP reports the state Board of Education accepted Education Commissioner Richard Gibboney’s resignation amid fire over his tenure. Five of seven board members attended a special meeting as Gibboney telegraphed his departure effective September 25, 1967 for professional advancement reasons.
A kitchen and living room blaze of undetermined origin caused extensive damage at the Charles A. Sauer residence on Beech Street Extension. Mrs. Sauer alerted responders at 11 40 a m and Bennington Rural Fire Department battled the flames without water, using tankers. The fire was controlled about 15 minutes after arrival. The article also notes a political shakeup as commissioner Gibboney faced resignation, with the board voting to end his term August 1 and possible replacement steps amid Gov Hoff's stance.

Albany UPI The Public Service Commission denied a request by 285 major New York trucking firms to raise rates. Public hearings are set for July 19-20 in Albany as the commission probes whether the increases are justified. Proposals would have lifted class and commodity rates for truckload and less than truckload shipments plus minimum and accessorial charges, by about 3 to 10 percent.
UPI reports Thursday saw 170 U.S. missions over North Vietnam, the fourth heaviest day to date, with 97 by Air Force fighters. Losses included 1 American plane in South Vietnam and 1,465 planes lost overall, while a SAM boomeranged into a village near Haiphong causing heavy flames. Casualties rose in the DMZ and South Vietnam as 44 Americans killed and 110 Communists dead in the week’s fiercest fighting.
Pablo Casals, 90, part of the Marlboro Music Festival for a seventh summer, says peace is essential for all to enjoy music. He recalls coming to Vermont in 1960 at Rudolf Serkin’s invitation and notes he aims to teach masters of music who play under his baton. He plans to stay through summer as Prague lacks a festival, and urges younger composers to express themselves through the great masters.
United Press International reports ongoing artillery, mortar and tank exchanges across the Suez Canal between Israeli and Egyptian forces. Cairo says Israeli assault boats were repulsed, civilians were killed, and tanks were destroyed on both sides amid cease-fire violations. UN observer postings were planned with Swedish, Finnish, Burmese and French officers to monitor the truce as regional leaders met in Cairo.
