Bradford Smith Obituary Highlights International Education Pioneer
Bradford Smith, author of more than 20 books and a leader in international education, died at his Shaftsbury home at 10 a.m. after a two year cancer struggle. He contributed to the New York Times Book Review and other major magazines and wrote a weekly column for New England papers. Born May 13, 1909 in North Adams Mass, he studied at MIT and Columbia, taught in Japan, and held roles at Colubia College Bennettington and RPI. His works covered American culture, social history, religion, and novels, with notable titles including Bradford of Plymouth and Captain John Smith.

Hoff seeks disaster aid for Bennington County hay growers
Gov. Hoff urged the national and state disaster group to have Bennington County declared a disaster area for emergency grazing and haying. At a special meeting the Pownal Town Democratic Committee formally disassociated from James W. Lounsbury for his alliance with Roger MacBride. Lounsbury will not seek re election and works as MacBride's campaign manager. The committee set a July 27 meeting to choose a town representative candidate and noted primaries on Sept 8 with filing by July 29.
