UPI reports U.S. forces trapped a guerrilla band on a main Communist route to Saigon and killed 23 Red troops after an eight hour two act battle late Wednesday. The clash involved U.S. units engaging the fighters in sustained combat. The operation aimed to disrupt enemy traffic and deny the Viet Cong use of the corridor.
Vermont poverty director Thomas Davis says his father Deane C. Davis may tour southwest Vermont to view poverty conditions. He invited Democratic candidate John J. Daley and Republican candidate James L. Oakes to join next month if schedules permit. Davis notes mixed signals on support for an income maintenance plan. Washington officials reportedly offered some encouragement. In other items, U S combat updates report low weekly casualties in Vietnam with American deaths totaling 198 last week and 1,248 wounded, while Communist losses reached 961 killed and 293 Vietnamese deaths. In Lauterbrunnen Switzerland a 15 year old American student John B. Kirby of Westmoreland Hill Montgomery, Vermont, and his teacher Walter Young of Stowe Vermont fell over 300 feet on the Moench Alp while descending from the main peak. Young was killed instantly and Kirby died later at Lauterbrunnen Hospital after transport by military helicopter. Young was assistant headmaster at Stowe Preparatory.
Prague reports Soviet Union will start pulling back part of its 18 500 troops in Czechoslovakia this Saturday easing the crisis. Officials varied on whether all troops would depart with statements about a readiness to withdraw beginning July 13.
About 1,500 ghetto youths gathered at City Hall in New York to protest funding cuts for summer jobs, clashing with police for over two hours. Five police horses were deployed as 250 officers quelled the disturbance. nine hurt and nine youths arrested. The protest cited Congress cutbacks in antipoverty funds as the trigger.
