Oil Spill Spreads in Walloomsac Town

An estimated 3000 gallons of number 6 crude oil spilled from an open valve behind Ben Mont paper company, flowing into a storm drain and the Walloomsac river toward New York State. Police discovered the leak at 11:18 p.m. Wednesday and the plant shut the valve. Company officials suspected vandalism and notified federal and state agencies while cleanup crews worked from pallets and pumps. The oil damaged riverbanks near Harmon Road and under the Silk Road covered bridge, with visible slicks and a strong odor reported.
