Maritime Unions Threaten Strike Over Oil Tanker Waiver
Three major U.S. maritime unions warned on Friday they would strike military shipping to Vietnam unless the Defense Department withdraws permission for foreign flag tankers to carry American oil in coastwise trade. The telegram to Defense Secretary McNamara was signed by leaders of the Masters Mates and Pilots union the National Marine Engineers Beneficial Association and the Maritime Union. They said they were shocked by McNamara’s order waiving the mandatory use of U.S. flag ships in domestic petroleum movement and warned the strike would begin Tuesday noon July 1 on ships meeting Defense sealift requirements.

IJC Rejects Champlain Waterway project as unfeasible
The International Joint Commission ruled economic analysis shows no measurable cargo benefits from Champlain Waterway improvements between Montreal and Albany. It backs recreational uses and calls for a joint recreation study while noting costs would exceed benefits for 12 to 27 foot channels in both the United States and Canada. The inquiry, ordered July 5, 1962, found no insurmountable engineering issues for a Hudson River link but no economic case for the canal.

Michigan Housewife Traces Earhart Flight Worldwide Return
Ann Pellegreno of Michigan, dubbed flying housewife, landed in Carland California completing a 30 year old mission to retrace Amelia Earhart. The Lockheed 10 Electra arrived at 1:41 p.m. after a 20 hour leg from Hawaii, part of a 28 day 28,000 mile world cruise that included stops across the Pacific and a final Oakland departure. The flight yielded new clues to Earhart’s disappearance while organizers plan further talks in Denver and Newton Kansas. Pellegreno and her crew of Col William Payne navigator William Polhemus and Lee Koepke pursued more evidence and promised to mail material gathered during the Pacific segments. The project faced course limits due to the Middle East crisis, and Pellegreno hopes to shed light on the 1937 mystery of Earhart’s fate.
