Survey Finds High Death Rate Among Vermont Deer
Vermont Fish and Game reports an average of 58 dead deer per square mile from 59 deer yards across 12 counties. With antlerless deer seasons moratorium, no hunting this fall, and harsh winter conditions blamed for mass losses, the state estimates up to 40,000 deer may have died in 1970-71. Malnutrition, especially among fawns, is a leading cause, while dogs also contributed significantly.
