United Nations Secretary General Thant warned that open warfare along the Suez Canal may force withdrawal of U N peacekeeping forces as fighting intensifies. Israel said it shot down Egyptian jets in air battles near Sharm El Sheikh, marking a week of clashes and a total of 27 Egyptian planes shot down since June 1967.
