UPI reports two liberal senators faulted military spending in 4th of July remarks urging budget shifts. Mondale linked city decline to defense costs, Eagleton cited 81 billion and a pending 20 billion procurement bill, while Goldwater defended security amid the debate.
The Bureau of Outdoor Recreation approved a 5916 grant to Lyndon Vermont for 60 acres of land purchase and ski slope improvements including a T bar lift and rope tow. Col Frank Borman became the first American astronaut to walk Star City in Moscow outskirts. United Press International reports the Fourth of July holiday traffic toll reached 201 deaths by 4 a.m. EDT, with a total holiday death estimate between 550 and 650. California led with 20 fatalities, followed by Texas with 16 and Michigan and Ohio with 15 each. The National Safety Council cited an hourly average of 6.4 deaths and noted historical records for holiday totals.
Vermont forms the Vermont Housing Investment Fund to supply seed money for low and moderate income housing projects. Gov. Davis and James Finneran announce the fund with incorporators including Gov. Davis and former Gov. Hoff. VHIF aims to provide 2 percent of total project cost as seed money, with federal programs covering the rest.
