Record Fourth of July traffic death toll breaks prior high
Nationally motorists set a new death record for the Independence Day weekend despite police efforts and safety warnings. Vermont reported a lone weekend fatality near Whitingham as Clifford Pierce of Greerfield Mass died after a pickup truck overturned, pinning him under the vehicle. The UPI tally showed at least 492 traffic deaths from 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, with 141 drownings, 6 plane deaths and 85 miscellaneous fatalities, totaling 724.
