Vermont Office on Aging saved by state action

The executive secretary of the Council on the Aging says attaching the Office on the Aging to the Human Services Agency preserved the unit within Gov. Deane C. Davis administration. Stephen J. Green issued a disclaimer about independent status while Green's three part proposal kept the office as a distinct unit under Human Services Secretary William S. Cowles Jr. The plan would protect the five member staff and include other agency officials under an expanded council. Green noted funding was restored by the legislature after earlier cuts related to federal Older Americans Act requirements.
