Economist Testifies Vermont Yankee financing hooks consumers

Professor James R. Nelson told the Vermont Public Service Board that Vermont Yankee’s financial structure overburdens Vermont residents and firms. Witnesses raised questions about the emergency cooling system and potential costs if the plant misses its startup date.

Cooling system questioned at Vernon reactor startup

Attorney Harvey Carter, representing four conservation groups, suggested the emergency core cooling system at the Vernon plant may require modification before startup. He cited a letter from General Electric to Vermont Yankee about needed changes, while plant president Albert Cree denied knowledge of such a letter or problems with the cooling system. Separately, New Hampshire plans to seek an injunction to force Vermont Yankee to obtain a permit to discharge radioactive wastes into its river, arguing river ownership under a 1942 Supreme Court ruling. The state hopes to present its case at the AEC licensing hearings in Brattleboro on August 10, with the option for the plant to operate in a closed cycle using its own cooling towers.
