Cardinal Brennan Dies At 74 In Philadelphia
Francis Cardinal Brennan, a Pennsylvanian coal town native who rose to the Vatican’s top American post, died in Philadelphia at 74. He had been in Misericordia Hospital since June 18 for tests and illness. Brennan led the Congregation of the Sacraments, named to the post Jan 15 by Pope Paul, after long service at the Roman Rota and various Vatican roles. He was born in Shenandoah in May 1894, studied in Rome, and served as a Philadelphia priest and seminary professor before rising to dean of the Rota and deputy dean prior to becoming dean in 1959.
