Hoff Signs Broadened Rooms and Meals Tax in Vermont
Gov. Philip Hoff signed the bill broadening the rooms and meals tax and blasted the Republican legislature for spending more than he preferred. He called the tax unplanned and a de facto University of Vermont tax, saying the higher budgets needlessly widened the gap. The change, delaying reform, raises about 1.7 million and lowers the minimum food purchase tax to 14 cents. Hoff decried the measure as regressive and costly to enforce.
