Progressives eye McGovern win at Miami convention
Miss Paris, a Vermont progressive, predicts a first ballot McGovern victory with Muskie or Kennedy possible second or third ballot switches. Humphrey would ruin the Dems if chosen. She urges grass roots campaigning and tax welfare reform focus to appeal voters, and plans to work on statewide campaigns after the convention. The Miami gathering in early July is seen as a test of government by and for the people versus party machinery.

Opie case continued as trial nears September date
Testimony from 1970 environmental act era discussed costs for wiring to occasional use sites versus permanent developments. Green Mountain Power’s Bernard Browe cited 51000 for 4.5 miles of line to serve such sites. Civil engineer Daniel Cadiz noted road difficulties near Chimney Hill and Opie property. Garry Buckley, Bennington Realtor and state senator, argued best use as one-acre lots or clustered developments, with potential mobile or tent site use under Stamford ordinance. A bill from Rep. Timothy O’Connor could override town selectmen in land sales to the National Forest, reshaping the Opie dispute if enacted. Trial resumes in September before Chief Judge Hill.
