Social Security hike clears Congress new 26 percent tax rise

Congress approved a 20 percent Social Security benefit boost effective September 1 and phased tax increases to cover costs, despite Nixon veto talk. The plan raises payroll taxes for about 96 million workers starting January 1974, with higher taxes rising to 27 percent for earnings over 10 000.
