A Thai International Caravelle with 80 aboard crashed into Kowloon Bay in rain near Kai Tak Airport. Rescue boats and helicopters saved 56. 24 were dead or missing. 73 passengers, seven crew. may have 58 Americans aboard. Weather blamed by officials for offshore typhoon and downdraft.
Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller sends Jackie Robinson and Milton Luger to assist Buffalo officials in quelling fourth night of racial violence. They meet police and Negro leaders as over 200 people are arrested. 21 stay in hospital. The incident area spans three square miles on the East Side amid looting, fires, and threats.
President Johnson signed a four year extension of the draft law just before expiry while boosting the national debt to a new record. He also ordered curtailment of dairy imports and issued deferment provisions for students pursuing advanced degrees under the draft. The debt ceiling rises to 365 billion for a year starting July 1 1968.
In Havana Soviet Premier Kosygin departed after four days of talks with Fidel Castro. Large crowds and bands greeted the aircraft as Kosygin waved from the ramp before flying via Gander to Paris for a summit with Charles de Gaulle. Tass reported Moscow would stand guard over Cuba though no final communique was issued.
In a United Nations General Assembly session, Latin American nations and a non aligned bloc filed five resolutions urging Israel to retreat from occupied Arab territory and proposing international control of Jerusalem. The 122 nation assembly adjourned for weekend talks with a Monday vote looming as Israel rejected the non aligned plan for troop withdrawal.
New York judge Herman Weinkrantz freed 39 hippies arrested during a Memorial Day be in in Tompkins Square Park East Village. He dismissed charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct ruling arrests were largely for pre arrival acts and not lawful. The clash involved nightstick use and a near riot as officers dispersed the gathering.
The Air Force named four more astronauts for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program including the first Negro pilot Maj. Robert H. Lawrence Jr. 31 from Chicago and a Vietnam combat veteran Maj. James A. Abrahamson 34 from Portland. Also named were Lt. Col. Robert T. Herres 34 of Denver and Maj. Donald H. Peterson 33 of Winona Mississippi. Lawrence said his selection was incidental and a culmination of training and support from others.
United Press International reports that up to 800 people could die in traffic during the long Fourth of July weekend as states mobilize police and safety groups. Drownings and fireworks hazards add to the risk, with records noted from past holidays.
Saigon reports US jets attacked Haiphong outskirts amid Soviet accusations of a freighter strike. Washington confirms possible hit on the freighter as jets targeted fuel dumps and an offshore oil dump near the city. The battle coincides with Marine clashes near Con Thieu and B 52 strikes west of the post.
Sisters of Saint Joseph teaching in Bennington schools began testing new dress designs this month. A committee selected seven or eight complete outfits for trial and any sister may model combinations from the designs. The trial will continue into the fall with no final habit decision for about a year.
