Army Corps of Engineers official Newell Rozelle called the sight fantastic. Later in the day a school redistricting plan proposed by Supt. Sidney L. Johnson faced a largely unenthusiastic crowd, proposing closing two under populated elementary schools and redrawing district lines. A second hearing was scheduled for tonight.

In Berkshire the wooden gravity dam at Monument Mills buckled under the swollen Housatonic River at 3:30 a.m. and collapsed sending dark silt and ice downstream. Owner Richard Pope of Southport, Conn. acknowledged trouble with the dam and said he is glad it broke. Public works had threatened breach costs, but nature preempted the plan. In Pittsfield Rep. Silvio Conte acknowledged ties to Rockwell International Lodge but denied impropriety, noting many lawmakers visit.
