Pilot light may have caused New Bedford fire
Fire officials in New Bedford Massachusetts believe a small pilot light in a basement furnace or water heater sparked gas explosions that demolished five Union Street buildings near the waterfront. The blasts fed by an 18 inch gas main shattered over 1 000 windows and caused up to 2 million dollars in damage. Three firefighters were injured lightly. The Whaling Museum and Seamen's Bethel escaped serious damage. Officials expect a final cause within days.
