Fire destroys four stores and restaurant in VIP complex

A morning blaze gutted Sears Vermont Commercial Carpet Center Magoo's Sub Shop and the VIP Restaurant at Routes 11 and 30. Fire Chief Harrington called it a total loss with no injuries. investigation by Detective Cpl. Horton will determine origin. Two hydrants failed, water was siphoned from the Battenhill River with help from Dorset and Arlington units. Gibbs Oil Company owns the building.

Williams College environmentalist a finalist for EPA post

Thomas Jorling, director of Williams College Center for Environmental Studies, is one of four finalists for administrator of the federal EPA. He confirmed being checked out by Carter aides, noting they contacted him last Tuesday and he has heard nothing since. He said he has not sought the job and has worked for friends who pursued it.

Jorling weighed for EPA post amid Carter talk

Jorling said he had not decided on accepting the EPA administrator job though he called it a growingly important federal post. He chairs Williams College environmental studies and has a background in law and ecology including work on the Clean Air Act and Water Pollution Act. A Carter spokesman said no administrator named yet and the other finalists could not be learned.

Gunmen seize Spanish general in Madrid amid protests

Suspected left wing gunmen kidnapped Emilio Villaescusa Quiles, 64, chief of the judiciary arm of Spain’s armed forces, outside his Madrid home as protests erupted over a student death and arrests. Police fought demonstrators with truncheons and smoke as authorities tied the abduction to demands for prisoner releases. The four attackers seized the general, gagged the driver, and left the vehicle after driving off with Villaescusa in a waiting limousine.

Ex-Pittsfield mayor eyed as chief of protocol for Carter

Evan S. Dobelle, former Pittsfield mayor, emeritus commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management, is expected to be named the nation s chief of protocol by President Carter. The role carries ambassadorial rank and a salary near 39 000 a year with no Senate confirmation.

Candle blamed for raging fire at Mt. Top Inn

In Chittenden, a candle sparked a spectacular blaze at the Mountaintop Inn, damaging half the main building. The 35 guests were evacuated safely, two firefighters were lightly injured, hydrants were frozen, and guests failed to extinguish the flames. The 1871 resort hosted famous guests including Dwight D. Eisenhower and represented a major local business and tax source.
