Composer asks Nixon why Lincoln work was dropped
Composer Vincent Persichetti sent President Nixon a letter seeking reasons for removing his Lincoln based musical narrative from the inaugural concert in Washington. The Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy faced protests from Leonard Bernstein supporters and religious peace groups, with Chaikovsky's 1812 Overture replacing Persichetti's piece. The Kennedy Center event, narrated by Charlton Heston, saw potential walkouts and uncertainty as members reportedly considered not performing.
