Shaftsbury Biologist Reconsiders Wild Farm Pheasants

State biologist William Drake told the Fish and Game Club that released game farm pheasants are not ideal but are plentiful. Wild Vermont pheasants have declined due to scarce habitat, farm sales, and harsh winters. Local clubs might release farm birds to aid hunting, though success would be limited, and Drake urged exploring other birds like wild turkeys or Korean pheasants while cautioning against large investments in new species. He noted limited state funding for evaluation and emphasized club-led development of a wild strain as the best path.
