US Jets Bomb Railroad Yard Near Hanoi
U.S. planes fought heavy anti aircraft fire and bombed a railroad yard about 40 miles northwest of Hanoi. North Vietnamese claimed four U.S. jets downed for a two day total of six. Viet Cong guerrillas used tear gas against American troops in the South, but wind blew the gas back, sending guerrillas fleeing. B52 raids in the Iron Triangle north of Saigon reportedly wiped out a 1,200 man regiment, with 200 killed. Today's raids followed Monday’s Hanoi area strikes and two U.S. jets shot down.

Extension of Truce Rejected
South Vietnam tentatively rejected a seven day Viet Cong truce proposal during Tet beginning February 8, sticking to a four day halt and offering talks on a longer cease-fire on a properly supervised basis. U.S. officials opposed longer truces, saying they would allow Communist regrouping while 300 truce violations were logged during prior 48 hour pauses. The government said 96 hours would remain in effect at Tet with no offensive operations, as battles raged in the Iron Triangle and near Dong Ha with B52 strikes and fighting around Leatherneck positions.
