Rival IRA factions join to battle British troops in Londonderry
Rival IRA factions combined to fight British troops for two hours in Londonderry Bogside, the heaviest gun battle there in over two years. The British reported four IRA combatants wounded and the IRA claimed two soldiers wounded, a claim the army denied. Civilians, including women and children, sought shelter as bullets flew in the field near a school route. A joint IRA statement said fire opened only after soldiers shot at civilians. Earlier, a British helicopter was targeted during the clash.
