Berkshire Town Eyes Takeover of Torrey Woods and Bullock Trusts

Selectmen in Williamstown consider assuming control of Torrey Woods and Bullock properties from three trustees after a Conservation Commission push to reallocate 1200 from the Torrey Woods fund for a picnic area. Torrey Woods, 24 acres south of Taconic Trail, was donated in the early 1900s for recreation. Bullock land, donated in 1925 as a wooded park, holds a small 200-dollar fund. Meanwhile Adams reports the state bought over 2000 acres near Greylock Reservation in New Ashford Cheshire and Lanesboro for 51000 from Eagle Street Realty Trust owned by Berkshire Eagle editors. Vermont House weighs higher minimum for teachers

Public Hearing Planned on Riehle Bill

The House Natural Resources Committee scheduled a public hearing today on a bill by Rep. Theodore Riehle to curb outdoor advertising. The measure would require state owned directional signs to replace billboards along Vermont highways. Agriculture Commissioner Robert Branon argued Thursday that banning off premise signs would harm farmers without access to major roads who use signs to direct customers to farms for produce. He said such signs rarely harm scenic views and could add rural character, urging state action to allow farmers to erect signs advertising their products.
