29 Below Zero Sets Bennington Cold Record
A 7 am reading at the U S Weather Observer Station on Harwood Hill registered 29 degrees below zero in Bennington, the lowest in 15 years for the observer and a mark among Vermont and New England records. Readings showed 32 below in St Johnsbury and 25 below in Burlington, with Maine and New Hampshire also reporting extreme cold as a northern regional cold wave continued.

Tanker Righted After 10 Hours In Grafton NY
A 40 ton liquefied propane gas tanker overturned on NY 2 near Grafton Elementary School. Half the load was siphoned into another tanker, 215 students and 15 families evacuated, and traffic rerouted while police fire and state officials removed the vehicle with heavy equipment in sub zero weather. The 21 year old driver James Diorio and passenger James Rosenberg escaped injury. The truck operated by L P Gas Transportation Inc of Chester had picked up propane at Selkirk depot en route to Adirondack Bottled Gas Co.
