More Than Meets the Eye in Mathews Deal
Eddie Mathews and Arnold Umbach were traded from the Braves to the Astros for Dave Nicholson and Bob Bruce. Paul Richards engineered the swap, adding Bruce as part of the package. Nicholson had shown flashes with 22 homers in 1963 but batted .229 that year, while Hatton believed Nicholson needed a real chance to pitch before moving him back to the outfield. Richards values Nicholson as an outfielder, but suggests one more year in the minors may help him.
