In Montpelier UPI reports interim Sen. Robert Stafford won the Vermont special election to fill the late Winston Prouty’s seat. Former secretary Richard Mallary captured the lone House seat, defeating Randolph Major Jr. with Mallary sweeping 39,762 votes to 26,789 for J. William O'Brien. Sanders and others received minor totals. Nixon congratulated Mallary. Stafford plans to be sworn in Jan. 18, with Mallary aiming for committee seats but facing a possible short tenure before the fall election.
