Farmers can do their share in conservation
By John C. Page, UVM County Extension Agent, outlines practical energy saving steps for farms in 1974. Focuses on shade for gasoline tanks, tractor sizing, lowering RPM for plowing and harrowing, seed bed quality, insulation and vapor barriers, efficient hot water use, sharp tools, damper use of fans, avoiding low voltage issues, proper standby power installs, and sharing generators. Encourages staggered hours and neighbor sharing to reduce costs and conserve energy.

New York farmland protection earns praise from experts
More than one million acres of prime farmland in New York were placed under agricultural districts in two years, protecting farms from speculation and sprawl. Districts cover 10 percent of farming land and include 15 to 20 percent of the state's best farmland, with Orange County leading in districts and acreage. Experts caution it is early to judge impact on communities and tax revenues.

County Youth Notes Energy Crisis Spurs Family Reunions
County Youth Notes argues the energy crisis reduces travel and keeps families home, countering a trend of fragmented households. It cites the 1970 census showing half of Americans living in different homes than five years prior, rising working mothers, and TV reducing family interaction. A suggestion is a no TV night to foster individual attention and rebuild family bonds.
