Defender General seeks more staff amid oppressive caseloads
In Montpelier the defender general's office plans a supplemental appropriation request in the 1974 legislature to hire eight part time public defenders and staff assistants. The program faces a bottleneck in ten district offices, with Chittenden County and Orange Washington Counties strained by caseloads. A $50,000 two year federal grant is being pursued to fund a full time prison attorney, attorney, para professional and secretary, with Paul Berch of Woodstock among candidates. Salmon administration backs funding beyond the grant term.

Questioned tax status could exempt NH refinery project
Concord reports that a 1971 NH tax change may exempt nearly all of Olympic Oil’s $600 million refinery and its Durham Point to Isles of Shoals pipeline from local property taxes. Officials note gray areas between machinery and real property and warn decisions depend on item by item assessments.
