GE executives rebut engineers in nuclear safety hearing

GE vice president George J. Stathakis told the Congressional Joint Committee on Atomic Energy that safety concerns raised by former GE engineers and a NRC official are old or being resolved under NRC surveillance. He stressed GE views nuclear power as vital yet acceptable only with health and safety safeguards, adding a potential GE accident would badly damage its reputation. The engineers questioned design features of GE reactors, including the Mark 1 containment shell and water pressure effects, arguing cumulative defects could make a serious accident certain.
