Fire Leaves Fourteen Homeless On BenMont Ave

Three families totaling 14 people were left homeless when an upstairs fire destroyed a 130 BenMont Avenue apartment owned by HOME Inc. in Bennington. No injuries were reported. The Levesques, Doucette, and Pettus families lived there, aided by state programs. Fire originated near a closet. cause undetermined. Cleanup and repairs planned. housing options uncertain for now.

Missing plane search tightens in Vermont Hunt

Vermont CAP units and ground crews from Vermont Maine and New Hampshire continued a third day search for a twin engine Piper Aztec missing since Tuesday morning on a Burlington to North Philadelphia flight. Pilot Joe Mongi 33 and William Beyer of North Philadelphia are missing. Search teams scouted a 20 square mile Rupert area as weather hampered operations with five planes ready.

Nixon and Chou hold private talks at Great Hall in Peking

President Nixon and Premier Chou En-lai continued a lengthy private summit in Peking following a public message at the Great Wall. The two leaders explored thawing relations and expanding Chinese American contacts, with a formal communique expected after Friday’s session and a banquet plan for Nixon. Nixon later voiced hope that walls between peoples would disappear and urged openness for Americans to visit China and Chinese to visit the United States.

Vermont House approves emergency aid to preserve education funding

The Vermont House voted 128 to 15 to spend 750000 to aid more than 100 communities facing reduced state education funding under the 1969 formula due to new property evaluations. The funds, added to Gov Davis 297 million recommended allocation, were redirected as emergency aid.
