Three New England governors urge federal welfare takeover
Three New England governors called for the federal government to assume welfare costs, arguing revenue sharing is unlikely soon. In an hour long At Issue interview on WITEV TV, Sargent cited welfare spending as over 40 percent of his 1972 budget, while Meskill noted welfare takes 25 cents of every tax dollar in Connecticut. Licht said he abandoned a pledge against a state income tax to obtain needed revenue, accepting criticism. Sargent denied welfare abuse charges raised by Farnsworth, who alleged 20 underworld figures in Springfield received welfare benefits totaling 100000. Farnsworth said he reported the information to state police.

Water restricted for interstate carriers from three cities
The EPA barred drinking water from Fall River Massachusetts Asheville North Carolina and Pascagoula Mississippi for interstate transport due to high bacteria levels and other deficiencies. The ban affects ships most but Asheville also serves the Southern Railway system. Restrictions will lift once federal standards are met. Local officials said Fall River water remains safe bacterially and the order cites need for a filtration plant and more supervision.

After weekend talks with the National Mediation Board yielded no schedule, both sides kept firm on job security as the key unresolved issue.
