Deep South Tornado Toll Rises With 60 Dead Across Delta

Rescue workers combed shattered sharecropper shacks in the Mississippi Delta for more victims in the region's worst tornado outbreak in decades. The confirmed toll stood at 60 dead with 500 injured and several missing across Mississippi and Louisiana, as the storm line stretched from Delhi Louisiana to Selmer Tennessee. A 17 year old survivor spoke of total destruction on the plantation while families mobile to shelters awaited news on missing relatives. Six people died in a Delhi Louisiana hut as storms ripped through communities leaving widespread devastation and fear.

Brazilian envoy freed by Uruguayan terrorists

Brazilian Consul Aloysio Dias Gomide was released by Tupamaro guerrillas after nearly seven months in captivity, in exchange for ransom rumored to exceed 250000. Dias Gomide flew to Rio de Janeiro with his wife. The release followed a clamped-down Uruguayan security regime and prior threats for a larger ransom for other captives including U.S. expert Claude L. Fly and British Ambassador Geoffrey Jackson.

Nixon renews plea for education aid

President Nixon urged Congress to pass a 1.9 billion higher education program providing grants work study and subsidized loans for undergraduates from low to middle incomes.
