Washington's faith shaped a president's public piety
The piece cites Fuller and Green in God in the White House to argue George Washington kept a lifelong Episcopal affiliation, rarely took Holy Communion, rebuked for turning from the Lord's Supper, and refused to kneel in prayer. It notes his private letters show growing religious feeling and his farewell call to religion as a basis of national morality.
